Newfoundland

N atural beauty that dazzles the eyes
E nveloped by the Alantic ocean it lies
W inters are long with lots of storms
F og so thick it defies the norms
O ffbeat people who like to have fun
U nusal named towns, ***** is one
N ewfinese slang, a translator you may require
D angerously high winds can sometimes transpire
L oads of tiny islands, over 7000 waiting for you to explore
A bundance of sea food, oil, ice burgs and moose to hunt for
N icknamed 'The Rock', breathtaking mountains and hiking trails to ascend
D are to be 'screeched in' and become an honorary Newf and forever friend

*Screeched in: An initiation ceremony where the person must drink screech rum, kiss a cod and speak some Newfoundland slang.
The participant then becomes on honorary Newfoundlander.

Hey, I came here to find a poem I might respond to and saw a note you left me a long time ago on reply (I rarely return to a person's poem, so I don't often see those replies) I enjoyed the dialect you used in your reply to me. So charming.

Wow Cecilia! This sounds like a great place! Much enjoyed. You made it easy for us to become honorary Newfoundlanders...you gave us some slang to study, buying a cod to kiss is no problem....just a case of acquiring a lil bottle of screech rum:) // paul

Newfoundland slang? Could you give us a few common examples of the native jargon? This is a very interesting acrostic poem about the maritime province.

Thanks Robert, I have since lost the accent and the slang, although it slips out once in awhile, lol. They also speak really fast, here are a few: "pull the door to" ...close the door "i'm all in" ..... i'm very tired. "go on by! " - You sure? " i dies at u"- meaning your some funny person God bless your cotton socks' - Thank you. Take Care - means to say good-bye ( I say this often) Ya blabber tongue - Person with a big mouth, can't keep a secret "yur stund as me arse" - your not too bright. "stay where you’re to ’till I comes where you’re at." – Stay there until I get there.

Lol, very true Rick. Actually my accent is almost entirely gone, only comes out a tinge now and then. Most people are surprised when I tell them I'm from there. I been in Ontario longer than I lived in Newfoundland. Have an awesome weekend!
