New Year's Kiss
Every year since she was ten
She dreamed of the day
She’d be old enough
To count down to ten
And share a kiss into the new year.
Her first time away from family
And hope is a warmth in her chest.
Will this finally be the day
She goes into the new year
With her dream fulfilled?
On the couch with credits rolling,
The clock has struck 12
And her heart is tense.
Her chest sinks in discomfort.
No countdown into the new year.
She answers the family video call
Where all scream happy new year.
He mouths happy new year
And leaves her to them.
Soft disappointment is met
At the missed opportunity
Of a shared kiss
With the one man she thought
Was the answer to everything.
Another year without that moment.
Once again, her dream is unmet.
How long will she wait
For it to be met?
How long until she kisses someone at midnight,
Their lips meeting into the new year...
