Notes About The Poem

New Moonwalker

Year Twenty Twenty-Four,
they will choose one,
within a special group-
right now, just twelve;
another five in training, wrapped this year,*
will graduate as women astronauts.

These novel astronauts
are moonwalkers-
twelve of some thirty-eight are brave women.
Whoever thought,
way back in 'sixty-nine,
a female would set foot upon the Moon!

So, NASA's Astronaut Corps
set its goal- and not too long from now,
this will be true!
She'll wave to us,
leave footprints on the Moon
as done by men
so many years ago.

How proud we'll be
to see her standing there-
"a giant leap for man"-
now woman too!

Sandra, what a great tribute to these pioneers in human history. Love the ending, with your wink to Neil Armstrong in '69. Great to see you among the winners. Keep writing! ~ John
