Notes About The Poem

Neglect - Emotive Write

Neighbours hadn’t seen Johnny since his beloved wife’s funeral
Even then, no one thought to check if the old man was okay
Gasps of horror were heard when his body was discovered
Limply hanging from the rafters of his bedroom ceiling
Even the post piling up in the porch hadn’t alerted anyone
Clasped in his hands a picture of his darling wife and a cell phone….
The last number he had dialled was the Samaritans

Sad, Jan. Sometimes grief is insurmountable even when deep down we don't want it to be. Very nicely constructed poem. Like the use of the N spelling out the word Neglect and the would Neighbors as a counterpoint.

Wow - deep and dark it is, you went to a very dark imaginative place and created an impressive acrostic ... CayCay

Thanks for dropping by Linda - life issues take us away from doing a lot of things we enjoy and that includes soup - let's hope for better things for us all for 2016. I LOVED writing with you for your challenge and was so proud of the poem we penned - you are an awesome poet Linda never forget that!:-) hugs Jan xx

Well, it is sad that the suicide happened without anyone to be able to stop it..I am not sure if this was a real event or just a made up event from your mom's experiences..Enjoyed reading your contest entry..Thanks for stopping by my blog..Sara

This kind of thing is truly sad, Jan. (I wonder why he was calling the Samaritans, did you mean that maybe he was trying to stop what he had started?) Now I need to think what to do for this one!!!

I left it open to interpretation - was he calling to say he was depressed and was going to take his life or call them to talk about it and then still carry the act out... so sad - my mum used to man the phones for the samariatans when we lived in the Uk many many years ago - she was always exhausted mentally after her shift:-( hugs Jan xx

Very poignant! Unfortunately I have experienced the great sadness of knowing at least three people who had decided it was more preferable to swing...A great tragedy for all concerned!! A very merry Christmas to you, Jan, and a happy new year! My very best regards! :) john

Jan this is a wonderful acrostic, very nice flow, you were totally unencumbered by the enforced structure, felt like a natural poem. You should do very well with this one!

Thanks John :-) I'm not sure if it is deep and dark enough but it sure is sad and I have to go with the flow of my pen even on Christmas day lol - I thought I would set myself a challenge with the acrostic form and this tough subject matter:-) hope you are having a wonderful day:-) hugs Jan xxx

This is a sad tale. Hope you do well in the contest. My old poetry teacher wrote a book length acrostic called "Darkling". Peace & Power Matthew Anish P.S. Where did you work as a nanny for a Jewish family?
