Nate Love was freed from slavery after the Civil War along with his parents. He learned to read and write and to ride, rope and read the brands on cattle. He was hard working and well liked. He wasn't afraid to speak his mind when he saw an injustice and was known to be a peace maker. He died at the age of 65 yrs. but there is no record of the cause of his death. Since life was hard back then he was probably considered to have died of old age.

Nate Love After being freed from slavery, Became the most famous black cowboy in history. But the cause of his death stayed a mystery.

Nate is right up there with Nap... Napoleon, of course -- whose cause of death is still argued about. Thanks for the education, Judy. ~ gw

I really love the message and learning about this man. I think your second line needed to rhyme with the word "love" if it's for clerihew form, but anyway, it's a great poem.
