Narrow Road
I’ve travelled gladly down a narrow road
Which leads to peace and quiet, though I swear
That I have also borne a large and heavy load
Whose crown of lead was hard indeed to wear.
When I emerged, at last, from deep within
The deadly forest, suddenly I saw
That I had reached a place where I had been
When I had not yet learned my reason’s flaw.
I sat in wonder as I judged how fast
My life had trickled by beneath the sun,
But then I chased away and scorned the past
And felt content about the trip on which I’d gone.
