Nanny' S Day Off
On Sundays she likes to drive
To the country or the coast.
Cheered by fields of blazing hue,
singing hymns from home.
She threads her way
through Sussex lanes
on her only day of rest.
A substitute for azure blue,
the Channel sky is pebble grey grey.
She lets herself be soothed again
by the water’s suck and sigh.
Finding peace,
she takes her ease
between the earth and sky.
