Mystery of Dreams
Why can I remember that I dreamed,
But cannot retain what I dreamed
Before my bed cover is in place.
Asleep, so real; awake, forgotten.
Why do most dreams fade in morn’s light,
As the mind buzzes like a beehive,
Seeking to know the dreams insight,
Trying to comprehend the meaning.
Some with intrigue fill a searching soul,
Puzzled with despair and abject fear,
Lost in webs of unknown circumstances,
Struggling to be free of its grasp.
Other dreams cause a sense of delight,
A travel log of exciting sights,
Carries me to places of peace and rest,
Comforting my soul with all that’s best.
Some say dreams are normal and healthy,
But I don’t know what they mean or why I dream.
Am I acting out unfulfilled desires?
Are dreams just keeping my brain busy?
What do dreams bring to my life?
Strange images and physical sounds, and
Nightmares that cause horror and dread,
Along with dreams that cause fear and anxiety, add to the mix.
Must be a valuable benefit to this human experience?
But it remains a mystery to my understanding.
Do the experts in psychology and neuroscience honestly know?
Ah, Joseph, you Biblical diviner of ancient glory. Where are your kind?
If only I had your gift to interrupt the ones I remember.
Are they dreams, the subconscious manifestations during sleep,
Or visions, the conscious perceptions during wakefulness?
Do dreams fade and visions linger?
Enlighten me, O thinkers of the past and researchers of the present.
Reveal the mystery behind my dreams.
