My Sweet Old Cat

 
I found her in the morning laying, 
in her secret place. Oh, it was hard to see;
my tears were falling and I was full of dread,
I sent a prayer upwards with a wishful plea.

My beautiful girl was dying! And I was shattered,
through a haze of tears I kissed her head;
and I held her in my arms till her last breath,
whispering my love and pressed her to my heart.

We stayed this way for a very, very long time,
I sang her a lullaby. Oh, she had been a cat sublime;
later, I buried her in her favorite place in the garden,
I have no idea how long I sat there weeping;

        hours, hours, hours . . . returning for days,
               and still I go there to weep . . .
