My Stand On Free Verse

Poem contests that require free verse
I avoid like a plague
I entered this one to take a stand

Poetry should have meter and rhyme
Or to me it’s something else
Like an extract from a book

It's supposed to have complex patterns
Of one sort or another
Perceived as a coherent whole

Even this definition is gobbledygook
Certainly not definitive at all
So that where I am, today

If free verse is your bag
Please don’t be offended
Help me to understand

Hi there..here is what makes Free Verse..Verse and NOT gobbledgook [LOVe that word!] and NOT narrative. Poetic vehicles are used...synecdoche, personification, simile, metaphor, Meiosis, and Hyperbole, alliteration.. ;). You see above [like a plague] is a simile [as a coherant whole] too ;) but above what you have written is uninteresting there is No action no climax..

Debbie, thanks for the response, I will admit I'm not familiar with all the "vehicles" you identified. I do plan to read the responses to your contest; however, I don't expect a "light bulb" to turn on; but I'll try.

you have the who,what,..but no setting and no action. Most of what folks list here as free verse is not free verse..you'd need to read particular poets here to get it. Light & Love
