My Secret Life
If I had a secret life I would fly above the deep blue sea
For me a wandering Albatross a bird that I would yearn to be
Soaring, gliding, elegantly and even sleeping whilst I fly
Crossing continents, flying high, symbol of luck when sailors espy
With freedom of the skies and the wind beneath my wings
I have the longest wingspan of any living bird you’ve heard
8 feet three to eleven feet six my black wings fly me round the world
My wingspan is so vast I am the master of this task
I can circumvent the globe in just six and forty flying days
Never stopping, leaving others open-mouthed and in a haze
For I have been upon this earth for fifty million years
Protecting ancient mariners from their superstitious fears
Legends say to kill me; your life would end without a friend
A life of sixty years or more with just one mate whom I adore
Flying each and every day, no predators take my life away
I sleep whilst soaring high in the skies never managing to close my eyes
I’m held in the highest esteem by every mariner in the world
Twirling, whirling like a dream, my wings expand, become unfurled
Man thinks I’m supernatural as I glide in the wake of their boats
Killing me would bring bad luck; seeing me fly they are truly awestruck
