My Prayer

Lord, you know I never will be perfect,
so I won’t lie and promise to be something I am not.
Lord, you know I’m weak, but with your help,
I pray I can be strong.

For myself, I don’t have much to ask.
I count my blessings daily because I am so grateful
for my health and sanity, friends and family,
the comfort of my home and spouse,
and a job that is fulfilling.

For all the little things that mean so much to me
I thank you too:
for the food I daily savor, which also feeds my body;
for the many things each day that feed my soul -
like the beauty of the land and mountains, sea and sky,
flowers, trees and creatures I have kept as pets;
for the knowledge I’ve obtained from books and classes
and the wisdom of the ages imparted to us all;
and I greatly thank you for the talent that you gave
to actors, dancers, artists, musicians, and all the many others
producing songs, movies, shows, artwork, and sweet poetry,
for you know me, Lord, and how much I adore
those worlds created from the fertile mind,
so I thank you for that portion of talent that you gave to me,
for it has brought me to a place of joy.

Finally, but most importantly, I ask that you would bless
the sick, the poor and the downtrodden, lost souls and
those who suffer from abuse.
Of all the virtues which a goodly soul should have,
I believe it’s charity I need the most.
It’s not enough to be a mere well-wisher.
I pray that I will take more opportunities given me
to bless the lives of others.
My recent sufferings have been so small
compared to that of many others in this world.
So I know that I should have a grateful heart,
for by experiencing pain myself, I have gained more empathy
for my fellow man and I’ve learned to more appreciate
those days when I feel splendid
in body, mind, and spirit.
And thank you, God, for letting me feel free to just be me!

I think with that last line you've hit the very essence of what free will means, and why God gives it to us-- len carber

Hello Andrea, wow.. I never knew this about you. However, I'm really here to say.... Late Late, Happy Birthday, I am so sorry I missed it. I was out for a few days. I'm hoping you had one of the best ones yet. SO tell me what did Joe, get you this year :) I'm guessing you are not 55 yet:) Even though I met you on this site almost 5 years ago. :) Sending late birthday hugs... LINDA

A beautiful prayer filled with good wishes for others. Sometimes we think that we have it bad, until we see someone else worst than we are. Like you I always pray for others. Blessings always... Lucilla

To know the arts and joy from them is truly a blessing. You talk of so many things that teach us how to love. You talk to God, knowing that quality and quantity is love Hugs, daver

This poem is full of enlightenment. You're wearing your heart on your sleeve in this piece. and mastering yet another form. Aside from that, I'm so happy that you looked at my video. One day I'm go'n to make another, I've been so close so many times. Anyway you have given me an idea as to what I will post next; thank you for- "spend the day with poetry".

I'm of two minds with this, one a very well written prayer that allows who you are as a human being to come out, second and I don't mean anything except to express a belief, that is for me prayers are private,still a good prayer poem my friend

frederick. it's not a really soul searching prayer. I made it this way because it was for one of the contest challenges, so it's almost like an essay on what I am thankful for, if you get my drift. And I think prayers can be among family and church congregations, but the very soulful ones need to be in private.

I like this. I went to Synagogue yesterday to do some praying. Where does poetic talent - like mine and yours - come from? Mystics would say it comes from G-d. Have you ever read "Man is Not Alone" by the late Abraham Heschel? It is an argument for a diety. Of course there are plenty of books by non believers. Someone once wrote something to effect that atheists may be actually worshipping the impersonal nature of God. Well in any case.... Peace & Love Matthew Anish

Yes, we all have a creator. I firmly believe that, and I think there are many very good people who are atheists and who have the right to be who they want to be as long as they are not harming society. When we die , we will all see what lies beyond, and I am hopeful it will be something good.
