Yvonne was my first love, she was only twenty When the Angels came down and took her from me Time is a great healer I would hear people say But my sadness and pain has never gone away. I'm eighty years old now and I've lived my life And pray that someday I again see my wife It's always more painful on Valentine's Day My only wish now is to quietly fade away. She was sixteen and a cheerleader for our team "Hi" she said smiling it was the start of our dream Just good friends at first and then we fell in love Cupid's arrow hadn't missed us from way up above. We'd go down to the beach and lie on the sand And just two years later I asked for her hand "My soul mate, best friend and love of my life I would be so honoured if you'd be my wife". "Of course John " she said and gave me a big smile That I'd again love to see; it's been too long a while We would always see each other every single day And I would not have had it any other way. We left school, started work and saved all our money Friends said " you're too young and what is your hurry" Yvonne was nineteen as she walked down the aisle. Then there she was beside me and gave me a smile. We bought our first house right down by the sea And her big dream was one day to have a family A year later I came home from working one night An ambulance was outside with a blue flashing light. Her parents were there; and her three sisters too They said "she'd called them and tried to call you She had complained of pains at the back of her head We went round to the house and found her lying dead". Their tears were now flowing but I just had to see I could not believe what they had just told me She had tried to call me but I was working outside I knelt down beside her; held her hand and just cried. They placed her on a stretcher and then took her away Yvonne's parents insisted at their house I should stay And for days I'd just sit there staring into space I would have given just anything to take her place. Her funeral day came; friends and family were there All through the service I cried, I just did not care The flowers on her white coffin were beautiful to see And that has always stayed with me in my memory I moved out of our house that we used to share The memories were too painful, I couldn't stay there I'd go down to the beach and walk along the sand And think back to the day when I asked for her hand. On our first Valentines Day sixty three years ago I realised then that I loved her and told her so She gave me that big smile, followed by a kiss My beautiful angel Yvonne I surely do miss. Thank you very much Connie, it's a joyful celebration for couples but I know for many it is not. I wanted to try and show that there's a sad side to it as well. I hope you are keeping well. Tom

Congratulations on your win. WOW!!! What a love story/write. I am so very sorry. Many holidays are very painful for many. Many years ago, my mother passed in March. I stood at the Mother's Day cards in the store & just cried. I wanted to buy her a card or two but knew I could not. Have a blessed day with hugs..........

Thank you very much BJ, I know valentines day is a very happy occasion for many but sadly for some it's not a time for great joy. I wanted to show the other side of it. Thanks for my placement and also for hosting the contest. Tom

Such a tragic turn on the traditional Valentine's poem. A very stirring piece deserving of its fitting top 10 finish.

Expected or unexpected losing a loved is always so difficult..it's nice to take comfort in memories shared and thoughts of a re-union in heaven..life is short and we should never take our loved ones for granted...sounds like they ceased opportunities and made the best out of the precious time they did share... always extra difficult around the holidays...sorrowful story expressed so beautifully, Tom

Thank you Melissa, I know holiday times are happy times and for those who have suffered loss it can be an emotional time when memories surface of times that were spent with a loved one and it can be very painful experience, more so when you see others all happy and jolly. We should all enjoy the time we have together because nobody knows what lies around the corner. oh my goodness, what a sad sad story this is . I thought it was true about you until I read some comments below here. I married my husband at age 19 and I do not think it is too young as many others seem to think. There was a guy here a long time ago and he had a story like this. HIs wife died on their wedding day on a boat. That is why I was thinking maybe this one was true too!

Andrea, What I wanted to do was show the other side of the Valentine celebrations, there are many who have lost their partners, two of my cousin's tragically lost their husbands at a young age so it's hard for them and indeed people in similar situations. That was an awful thing to happen to that poor mans wife, and sadly many find it difficult to move forward. By the way my wife was 19 and I was 21 when we got married ( 40 years this April) Regards Tom

Thank you Paul, for those who have lost a partner it can be a very emotional time. Two of my cousins found themselves in that situation, life can be cruel at times. Regards Tom

Awww...this is such a heart wrenching story, Tom. These things do happen, unfortunately. My best friend comes to mind. It was her senior year of high school and her and her boyfriend were madly in love and planned on marrying upon graduation. Fate took a bad turn and he was crushed in a farming accident when the equipment he was driving reared up and tipped on top of him. She's 50 now and tells me she still remembers getting the phone call...

How tragic for your friend Rhoda and sometimes it's not easy to move on.I know its a happy time for couples and why not, but I was trying to show that there is another side to it. Sadly two of my cousin's lost their husbands at a young age and both had young families, it was heartbreaking to see. On these days its hard for them and also your friend. Tom

A sad story Tom and one that happens again and again. I can imagine John's grief. Tragic. You have captured his anguish so well in your poem. My commiserations to John even so many years later and my admiration for you being able to capture the scene ...Maria

- A beautiful heartbreaking story, Tom - (I have to admit a lump in my throat and a tear in my eye) - I think John was a real lonely man, with a heart who always cried for his beloved wife ... I can see he's sitting at her grave on Valentine day with red roses ... he smiles through his tears - hugs // Anne-Lise :)

Wow! Tom, This poignant love story pulled at the heart strings and brought tears to my eyes. It is so sad yet beautiful because of the sweet love story shared between the young couple in this well written write. It reads like a true story. I'm left with two questins" Did he marry again? And did she die of cancer? Great take on the contest theme. PS, Happy Valentine's Day - Alexis
