My Mayberry Like Winters
The winters here in northern Alabama are pretty mild
unlike the ones up on Long Island when I was a child
were "lucky" to see a couple of inches here each winter
and if we don't we try not to become too bitter,
When the forecast does call for the rare "S" word
the folks panic and run to the stores to be early birds
afraid they'd miss out on all the milk and bread
they fill their carts as if they were all doomsday prepped,
And to add to the excitement we usually make some snowmen
ultra fast because we don't know how long they'll last
it could 32 degrees one day and 60 the next
which means our snowmen turn into one lopsided mess,
Since I live in a small town theres only so much to do
with the town square having window shopping if you choose
all kinds of windows that you can imagine
even ones from the 1970s that have gone out of fashion,
They have Christmas carolers and a parade for the holiday
which makes almost everyone who lives here day
even though they'll be no snow folks are still pretty thrilled
to see all their kin parade around in shorts and hardly catch a chill,
If folks want to go ice skating they have to go to Huntsville
but since I'm not into that I don't think I ought to
go somewhere where I might slip and break my neck
but since theres nothing else to do oh what the heck!
