My Living Breathing Poem

“I’m reading your poems, Mama” She wrote while we were chatting online today I was thrilled What could give me more joy Than to have my 19 year old My only child, the light of my life Read my work? Then she typed……. “I read it, Mama The poem you wrote about Daddy, ‘He comes looking for me’ It’s so pretty, Mama….I cried” A warm feeling came over me Joy….. Yes, joy!!! Joy that my words had moved Shereen Or...or was it because she loved her daddy so much? “He didn't blink an eyelid when I told him,” I grumbled. “I know, Mama! He isn't emotional Be patient with him, be patient.” I smiled How she loved and defended him He had just returned from Cyprus Where he had spent several days with her I could not go My teaching schedule always clashing With our plans to be together as a family Not emotional? If she could only understand He had cried on his way to the airport My husband... The man who never cries Who doesn't show his feelings… He cried remembering their goodbye After having given her a last hug Right outside her small rented flat He was surprised to find her on the street She had rushed down after him And there she was Flagging down The borrowed car he was driving Waiting…wanting One more hug from Daddy The big college girl Living away from home In her own little studio apartment There she was Standing in the cold Wanting yet one more hug.... From her daddy He cried She cried How she loves him This man whose genes Seem to have dominated over mine In creating this living beauty... Her curly hair Her complexion Her height Her beautiful shapely body It seems that she got everything from him But wait…..then again She got my heart My love of music My depth of emotions The luxuriant thickness of her hair YES! I MUST and WILL take credit for that She inherited my love for writing She already has a poem published My little girl My 19 year old baby Who reads my work And sheds tears She is my living breathing poem The best of who I am And what I have to offer The best of my love My greatest accomplishment My daughter…. Shereen Natalie Ghali My legacy to the world Eileen Manassian Ghali PS......if you want an idea of Shereen's writing ability, then look up the poem she wrote for me on my birthday...It's entitled...The Month of May- My Daughter's Tribute.

What a beautiful dedication to your daughter - and to her father. She certainly is a sweet girl and lives up to her name. Moreover, she inherited your inner beauty. Don't we love it when our daughter's are younger replicas of ourselves? My daughter and I are also very much alike but she's my worst and most honest critic!! Enjoy her all you may before she moves on, my friend. A warm hug to make the separation a bit easier. Licia :-)

I know I'm a silly silly goose, but I DO get jealous when she goes to her Daddy.....I'm like, "Girl.....I went through labor for YOU! It was tough work! He just had fun contributing his bit!" ;) She is very careful and always makes sure she gives me my share of love too! I do think she's Daddy's girl, though. Oh well, I'll take what I can get! Yes, my daughter will critique my singing, my writing, my clothes. The honest truth! Glad you are close to your daughter, sweetie. Love you for visiting an posting! <3

I just love this one from beginning to end. I like the thought of a child being a living breathing poem. This is a very special piece, I am sure it will be passed down from generation to generation.

How gorgeous is the love that explodes for your daughter! I know the feeling so well......and once when my own daughter read something of mine, and tears welled up.....it was the best moment ever as a poet to share that one quiet moment with her. Lovely poem, Eileen !

Carrie...thanks for the lovely visit and your kind words. I know it seems crazy, but one reason I didn't want to have any more children is that I didn't want to share my mother's love with others. I wanted to Shereen to get the full love, attention, and support that she deserves. At times parents play favorites, and it is so damaging to the children's psyche. I'm so happy your daughter connects to your work..and why shouldn't she. You are an amazing writer! :)

You're a lucky lady to have a beautiful and talented daughter, and writes like this are your second legacy, that to the world of poetry. Take care, Richard

Yes, I am blessed and fortunate, Richard. In many ways, she is stronger and more....dare I say...mature than I am! I know....shame on me, but it's true. She often calls me on things, gives me advice, gives me that "look" when she thinks I'm out of line in some conversation....She is amazing! I raised her up as a friend. Thanks for your kind words about my work, Richard. It means so much.

wow, your poem is AWESOME. the title makes a lot of sense too after reading this one. I am happy for you. My daughter is working on a novel but sadly, she does not seem interested in my writing and I just don't know why. I remember reading her stuff when she was in high school and being so proud of her!She is a good woman with three kids now. Just dont' understand why she won't relate to me with my poems.

Thanks, Andrea. I'm not trying to offer solace or anything, but your writing is absolutely superb. Flawless in its beauty. If your daughter can't see or appreciate that, it is probably because she has some other issue going on. Perhaps she feels she needs to prove herself, do something different that her gifted MAMA, and thus the novel is being born. Don't worry, sweetie. One day...she will confess that she thinks you're an awesome write, for that you ARE!
