My Grandma

MY GRANDMA

I wake in joyful anticipation
Breathing quietly in the bed you made;
Listening to the everyday sounds of morning beginning.

I step lightly down the narrow stairs,
Smells of coffee and bacon; Grandpa smiles.
Then you, in a faded dress and apron, and shoes with heels;
Although you never needed anything to lift you any higher in my eyes.

You say “good-morning”, with truthful intent;
This day stretching before me; this clean and glorious day
Unbroken by harsh hands, unbroken by pain and hidden meanings.

And there is no claim to my body or soul
Other than love in your heart, the regard you feel for me
Given without condition, given generously, freely, wide open love
Given to the child I am; for no gain or other reason than simply because I'm me.

Oh, your love for your Nana reflects so well the love I felt for mine-- I still miss her after 40 years.

I was flooded with memories when I was reading this. Thank you so much for that. I lost my grandmother when I was 12 and this poem brought her face to the forefront of my mind. Very well penned. Lots of Love, ~Misty~
