My Father, Upright
In the twilight
of his life
my father, erudite
said to me
Beware the praise singer
strangers who linger
the beggar, the liar
the lottery bookmaker
Son, he said again
watch travelers at dawn
those seeking gain
avoid the late comer
My father said to me
this is the key
my son, upright
this is your cue
