My Dog Is Grateful
Hunched over all the unpaid bills
spread on my kitchen table,
I glanced at my dog sleeping below
and thought: he must be grateful!
Grateful for having somewhere to live,
a safe, warm place that he can call home.
Grateful for birds and creatures to chase,
some flying high, some swooping below.
Grateful for all the food that he gets,
sometimes too little though often too much.
For having dear ones to spend time with,
a hand to touch, tickle or scratch.
And as I thought how good his life was,
an obvious thought came to my mind:
I'm pretty sure grateful he is,
the real question is: how grateful am I?
