Notes About The Poem

Lyric Poetry is a type of poem in which the poetic expression is much more personal and tends to show more feeling or emotion from the poet throughout the piece in a musical way.  However, more recently the term 'lyric' has been used to refer to  poems, often written in the 'I' form, where the poet expresses his or her feelings.

“I love the theory that if a city attracts you, it's because there's something
waiting for you and a part of the story has already been written . . . ”

My City

I love the gentle snowflakes falling
floating down from the sky like feathers
drifting, twirling, dancing, whirling and prancing
blanketing my city magical white

I was born into snow
the wind howling through the trees like banshees
city drifts and cars slipping
I arrived a snow child

I like to stroll the city streets
as magical snow changes downtown
pigeons hover on the ledges
folding their wings together

Ottawa steeped in history
the buildings are old and beautiful
gray bricked, elegant and sturdy
many homes Victorians

My city boasts of many winding trails
but nothing is more amazing than in winter
a crisp, walk among sleeping trees
oh, love hiking past a frozen stream that still ripples

I have creaking rooms in an old city building
outside my window trees in all seasons are my view
but winter snow falling on my city stirs my soul
I can hear my beloved snow calling me

come, come, come outside my love

Constance, I loved this poem and the way you use "snow" to illustrate so many parts of your city! Your words are as gentle, and magical, as an evening snowfall. I, too, love to walk in the evening when it is snowing. Congratulations on your win! Blessings of serenity to you.

So true, there is a beauty to snow. Your poem took me on a crisp winter walk through the city of Ottawa.
