Notes About The Poem

'my Childhood Christmas'

oh turn-
turn back time the pages of my life
I wish-
I could go back
go back to when I was a child
full of happiness and joyful glee
            to christmas with my family
before the sorrow . . .

I loved christmas day
            the cooking and decorating
    mom fussing and grandma dusting
dad entwining lights on the tree
the fireplace crackling and glowing
               snow falling and santa dreams
dancing in my mind on christmas eve
before the sorrow . . .

I recall the year-
I wanted a life size doll
but got a baby doll-
I was sad so very sad but held my tears
until I went to my room
a few days later I loved baby doll
                      and all her sweet accessories
another year I got snowball cat
all white I remember dad trying
to keep her in my stocking
and then she ran up the blinking tree
for the day
before the sorrow . . .

and we would go to grandpa's farm
      for horse pulled sleigh rides
through the snow covered fields and woods
that was so much fun
and grandpa would let me help
with the horses
before the sorrow . . .

oh the food and family coming and going
the laughter and singing and dancing
that is what I remember from my childhood christmas
before the sorrow . . .

I still have mom's and grandma's decorations
in a tattered box-
and I will decorate my tree
then, I will go and visit them all the beloved
            beyond a creaky gate
and touch each name engraved in stone
                                   and remember each one
before the sorrow . . .
