Mounting Alarm

There was that noise again
A soft buzzing in the room
Not that it was very loud
But with just the light from the moon
Sarah could not quite make out
If there was something there
Soon she found herself sitting up
And continuing to stare

It wasn't more than 5 minutes
Since her book she put aside
A story of a little boy
And why it was he cried
The tale was oddly haunting
As the pages she had turned
His father gathered insects
Was some of what she learned

The story dated from a time
When moths were pinned and mounted
In a way some might now feel a crime
Displayed behind a piece of glass
Labelled with great care
So that those who might pass
Could know what species that they were

There was that noise again
A little closer now she thought
More of a fluttering than before
Like something a spiders web had caught
And all of a sudden some movement did she spy
Over by the window in the moonlight
It seemed too frantic for a fly
And so much bigger too

Emerging from her covers now
Sarah ventured to investigate
Creeping slowly forward
In a slightly nervous state
Fingers guardedly placed
Across her blinking eyes
She sought out the culprit
And found to her surprise

A torn paper wrapper fluttered in a breeze
Just because the window was trapping it with ease
Her heart so jumpy just before
Was shortly once more calm
And the wrapper fell down to the floor
Where it would give no more alarm
