Morning Routine
When I say ‘I love you’,
Do I really mean ‘Don’t leave me’.
When you turn away from me first
Don’t I always try in vain
To catch the look in your eyes,
As if I could somehow divine the truth
Of what you are thinking.
Why does that panic flutter
Each time you kiss me goodbye.
I fight with myself
To keep from running after you,
To hold you one more time,
To somehow bind you tighter to me
As you walk out the door.
I ask myself the same questions
Morning after morning:
Does he really love me,
Or is he just turning away first
So he won’t be late for work.
