More Than the Blues
Sir Winston Churchill called it "his black dog"
It plagued him off and on throughout his life
And I have also been caught up in this cog
A storm of heartache, misery and strife
The blackness sinks you fast and lasts so long
At times it seems just breathing is a chore
Forgotten are the words to every song
Painted skies are beautiful no more
The mystery is you don't know how it came
Or why you're chosen to be burdened so
Aflame with guilt or frozen out with shame
Permeates and deals a deathly blow
Thinking you're the only one so battered
Solitary vision fills your mind
Finding all your hopes and dreams are shattered
Caring not the world's left you behind
One day you begin to reappear
Start the climb out of the dark abyss
Wake up once again, swallow your fear
Wondering why it always comes to this
That you should go through periods of pain
Stretches of vacuity and sorrow
At long last fight your way out of the rain
Look ahead now to a free tomorrow
