More Magnificent Monuments
When we pleasantly stroll down
the streets or boulevards
of any historical city or town,
we stops pensively and reflect deeply
by the magnificent monuments erected for the great;
and reading the engraved words,
we are astonished by the accomplishments
of the noble ones who existed in reality...
as we do in this remarkable century
so withdrawn in disaffect and so belligerent!
Columbus persuaded Queen Isabella
to provided him three caravels to sail
the high seas and discover a new land;
many disapproved of his eccentric ideas,
the doges of Genoa and Venice
refused to grant him that wish,
but acknowledged how right he was...
when he returned to Spain from Hispaniola!
In Barcelona and Madrid they erected monuments...
to honor that brave man with indefinable charms!
When we intensely gaze at some stupendous paintings,
we relish them with emotions so lost in dimension and dismay...
to be transported by imagination without intrusion;
everything becomes real to our inwardly illusion!
And those images are retained through feelings,
when we are caught unaware by such a revelation;
nothing can exude more charm and exuberant joy than they:
we deem them priceless, but laying there they connote simplicity!
Dante and Shakespeare were two prolific writers
of the insuperable Middle Ages;
one wrote cantos and the other plays...
how both still inspire, move and define us in astonishing ways!
And they were common men doing extraordinary things,
to be noticed by queens and kings who encouraged their liberty;
and by working hard, they accomplished much in their age:
everyone but they pitied the implacable human rage
and the ludricous thoughts they impinged on morals,
and had they lived today, wouldn't they criticize us anyway?
When we hear Mozart, Bizet , Beethoven, Chopin, Verdi, Tchaikovsky
and Gershwin with their sumptuous operas, rhapsodies, songs and symphonies,
we are quickly overwhelmed by a self-conscious sensitivity;
and their mastery is never self-praise, but exceedingly self-giving!
They wrote from their hearts, expressing and perpetuating
their selfless sentiments when inspiration conceded them many liberties!
Now recognition must be the ultimate laurel we can give them, and had
they known more freedom than we do, they wouldn't need this laud!
So let's erect them more magnificent monuments,
to remind all their genius and unique humaneness!
