Monsters in My Mind and Bed

“I’m convinced
They have
The same laugh”

I told
My therapist
The other day

The confused
Look
In his eye

And the awkward
Shifting in his chair
While clearing his throat

Had my brain
Manically searching
For better conversation

The weather
How unfulfilling my job is
Things I write about

But the words
Were shaky
Like the erratic yet soothing movement

Of my leg
Bouncing
Up and down

“What
Do you
Mean” he finally asked

The startle
From the sudden soft tone
In the room was embarrassing

But not as
Elucidating the comparisons
Of you and the monsters in my mind

I scribbled out loud
Each of your features
Like dry wit, stubborn habits

The details
I laid out
Were graphic

The dominant power
From insults toward me
Is jubilating

Repeated statements
Of my dreams being impractical
Too cheap and pointless to brag about

During a dinner
With friends
Only seen once a year

So I figured
Might as well stop building
The path to those plans

And just wither away
Into low spirits
Under the blankets of reality

I can still hear
The laugh personating a cough
As they lie next to me in bed

But honestly
Loneliness is harder to swallow
Than their existence
