Moments

sometime ago in the strange dreamland
of confusion
enter a room with stuff falling off,
falling over, falling down
today a file falls to the floor
in that moment deja-vu dashes across
the mind which paints in details
colours the memory, convinces the present
that premonition is at work
a moment of delusion

musical anticipation, expectation foments
when the waiting and memory is exceeded
by a freshly heard array of sound
by a textural rhythm and vibration of beat
by harmonic melody, a group of notes,
cadences and silence
by quality of voice or instrument
that transport the ear, the aural chambers
the gut, the senses in elevated appreciation
the goose bump moments

across the bar, the flash of eyes
then gone, then back again
holding, riveting, crushing time
irises enlarge, separation shrinks
probing, pulling, pulsing
engorge, arouse, attract, cavort
finally gone, searing into body and imagination
forever in a moment, no goodbyes

this morning one plus one equals two
one of a kind plus one of the same kind 
results in two of that kind, moment after moment
but wait!
it only takes one exception, one falsification
for this hypothesis not to be true

in a vacuum, one mile per hour plus one
mile per hour equals two miles per hour
but, in a vacuum, one speed of light plus
one speed of light computes as one speed
of light constantly
a moment of joy
special relativity, mass energy equivalence
variable time and distance
no privileged frames of reference
moments are not coincident
dice are loaded with probability 
gods are yet to become, for them we leave
the door ajar

another day and all is well
confirmation after confirmation
but the universe is playing tricks
wings of butterflies batter down
solid walls of certainty
moments elate when belief and faith
give way, 
when rigorous falsehood triumphs
the more we know
the less we know spell

from the tiniest Planck moment and distance
to the largest known structures
potential and possibility overcome the almighty
and eject the crudity and dullness
of the absolute
complexities reject linear progression and
vertical hierarchy
approximations coagulate creating emergent
knowledge, truth and existence

realities are separate but entangled
paradigms step-change, step through
spacetime out of the moment
redirect the ticking clock
dare to question inevitability
hot to cold, heat death
implosion versus nihilistic entropy
order versus disorder
so focus the purpose of intelligence
on the overcoming
before hope and moments are mangled

child challenged by war, gene or quake
man or woman cuddles and cradles
the innocence
remembering their own state of being
empathy born of self-knowledge or motherhood
the realisation of the child’s ordeal
the welling-up in the eyes, imagine the plight
imagine the pain as moments awake

positives surround negatives multiplying
but then, something, someone
batters the young being out of existence
in a moment
the potential loss unknowable
but the child will be recorded, counted,
valued and remembered
the tending man or woman will be honoured
the tosser of missiles
the foamer at the mouth of ignorance
these culprits will wither, turn to stone,
stultifying
