Mistake
Before I left you, all I wished
Was hidden far within,
As if your love had never been.
I ran away to see the world
And then forgot your name,
Although you never did the same.
I then returned and all came back—
My memories of you—
While you were steadfast, good and true.
I found you waiting, keeping watch—
And praying I’d return—
With not a candle left to burn.
And then I sensed my grave mistake
Of leaving you behind,
Of being youthful, rash and blind.
I feared your punishment, but you
Said nothing, while your tears
Ran down your cheeks and quelled my fears.
