Missed Vacation
It was time for a vacation, in fact it was overdue.
A three day holiday Fourth of July; we planned a trip for two.
The children were in high school and had things to do with friends.
Sometimes it doesn’t happen though, the best of our intends.
He had reserved a cabin in the mountains by a lake,
And I was like a schoolgirl deciding clothes to take.
We’d been married just two year before starting our family,
After that it seemed there was no time for just my love and me.
He said it was like beginning another brand new life.
The children would be leaving soon and he’d get back his wife.
I had some work at the office I must do before we went.
I told him I’d be home real soon, begrudging the time spent.
It didn’t take me too long to finish everything.
I was just about to close the door. The phone began to ring.
I thought it was a call from him, urging me to hurry.
I could tell him I was finished and there was no need to worry.
But it was his best friend calling, I could hear the sadness there.
We wouldn’t have our nice vacation and it really wasn’t fair.
He and Cliff had been out driving with my husband at the wheel.
He had died right there beside him. My head began to reel.
Through the years I’ve often wondered why God had to take him then.
If we’d had that last vacation, it might have helped me through the pain.
I’d like to take that nice vacation, the one we never had.
That our vacation didn’t happen, is truly very sad.
( No there was no accident. He just died.)
