Although she was my grandmama, We all called her Miss Ida. Children and grandchildren alike did succumb To this quaint, obscure, southern custom. In the days of gold and lavender, Mother was "Miss," and father was "Mister." When buttercups danced in the sun, When skies were vaguely cinnamon. She gave to me a lilac, gingham dress; It was cherished for its prettiness! Among my oldest memories Are those of being at Miss Ida's knees. She had a certain wood stove, Warm like those sunsets of mauve. And used to cook wild collard greens, In days when I wore little blue jeans. When bluebirds flew around the bend, And crows from the sunny South End, When cherries drooped upon the trees, I began life at Miss Ida's knees.

Awww, I knew I would find the poem to Miss Ida, I wonder if the fact of losing such wonderful relatives at such an early age to yourself is the reason you have such a wonderful photographic memory, how could they not be impregnated on your mind and "Ello Miss Ida, nothing short of what I expected her to be . . . : )

Hi, Indiana. I'm delighted that you enjoyed this poem, dedicated to the memory of my beloved grandmother, who was a friendly, country woman. When she first moved to Chicago, she'd speak to every single person she'd meet on the busy street. Yes, my memories of her are strong, and I thank God that I have them. Have a nice day, friend. :)

You are very welcome, Oldbuck! I'm so glad you liked what is a very meaningful poem to me! Miss Ida was the most wonderful granny. Although she died when I was only five, she certainly lived long enough for me to feel her love! I definitely intend to keep the poetry coming, with readers like you. :)

I adored this nostalgic poem Evelyn. I was born a mid-westerner but have lived in Hawaii the past 40 years. Your beautiful poem brought back some beloved reflections. Thank you! : )

You are very welcome, Connie! I am elated that the poem was so meaningful to you. You must enjoy Hawaii. It's so beautiful! After I outgrew the little gingham dress mentioned in the poem, my mother kept it for many years--into my adulthood, and then she made it into a quilt. Memories are a treasure. Thank you for your remarks! :)
