Mirrored Reflection

Who is this woman I see in the mirror? This isn't the face that's supposed to appear.
Her face is so sad, red and swollen from tears. There is no hope only worry and fear.
I had so many hopes and dreams. Hers didn't come true, or so it seems.

This isn't a woman who's accomplished it all, I see in her face accomplishments are small.
Her life was wasted by waiting too long, waiting for signs or miracles to come along.
She didn't try her hardest after failing, or try again to do her best. She sat there waiting for
someone else to do the rest.

I have to help her if I want to help myself. I'll remind her to just believe in herself.
She can do anything if she'll just try. I won't give up and just lay down and cry.
She can change her future but not her past. There's still time but I have to act fast.

It's time I become who I want to be.
Then I will recognize the reflection I see.

Congrats on a great win! I love the resolution and determination that are pushing up through the grief and fear. I hope you only placed yourself in this woman's shoes for the contest and these are not personal reflections.

Hi Sarah, , Loved how you extracted this one away. Congratulations, this is a great win, for such a painful and realistic theme, when writing about this topic, In which phantom's around Abused Women. Have a nice day:) ~LINDA

Thank you for entering the contest, Sarah and congratulations on your placement. This poem left me thinking that many abuse victims probably do look at themselves and wonder just who it is that is getting abused. You almost have to develop an alter ego as a defense mechanism against the abuse. And, they probably wonder, why does this person stay - even though it is them. I found this poem to be powerful and thoughtful. Thanks. Joe

This is very deep and sad, Sarah you have to believe and help yourself. The answers are not in what you see. They are found inside you. Great first poem, Stopping by with a nice, sweet Welcome to Poetry Soup. I will find much delight, in reading and in time become familiar with your way of writing. But, for the mean time, I will greet you with the same smile, other poets passed when I first join the soup 4 years ago. I wish you the best when it comes to your poems. I hope you get to meet all the nice poets around here. Starting with me. SKAT :-) Please drop a hello and tell me a little about yourself if you like. I would like to be your newest poetry soup "FRIEND". Hugs* SKAT
