Notes About The Poem

Mind Versus Heart

My mind and heart will never be friends.
Sworn enemies, they wrestle and box
for control of me, the battle never ends
like the tick tocking pendulums of clocks

I ask my mind when it keeps me awake,
"Tell me, what do you think I should do?"
It growls and huffs, "Oh, for goodness' sake.
If you heed your heart, it will lead you askew!"

It went on to tell me to slow down to a crawl,
and I shouldn't hurry to make a quick decision.
It compared me to Humpty Dumpty on the wall,
headed for a fall and on course for a collision.

I'm weary of refereeing their constant scuffle,
especially when it concerns falling in love or not.
I keep smoothing the crumpled feathers they ruffle.
When they argue I'm the one put on the hot spot!

When I ask my heart, " Will you lead me astray?"
I can feel it ache as though it's crying deep inside.
It replied, "My emotions are not easy to convey,
but from love's fervor you should not choose to hide.

Falling in love is a risk and a big decision to make.
Your mind may be a sage with words and thought,
but there's much to lose if real affection you forsake.
No mind can feel the love that lives in your heart."

An unresolved dilemma, so I petitioned my soul,
but it remained mute, mind nor heart did it refute.
"Which one of you should I trust with control?"
That became the cornerstone for another dispute.

Mind: "Heart, I knew to your whim she'd concede."
Heart: "She chose to love and fulfill her great need."

Sweet Linnzz, this is just too resonating! When heart and mind reflect as two contrasting perspectives and the soul chooses what it soothes it, the pulse that never blemishes when darkness rules. I so love the way you've said "I keep smoothing the crumpled feathers they ruffle" hah! Some feathers are meant to remain crumpled until they bathe in an elixir meant uniquely for each of our essence! For me, I'm tend to bow before my heart as my name literally means "heart" lol. Loved reading this! Sending you huggsszzz and rosy stars 🌹🌹💫💫

Linnersz, I always love your honesty. It is never easy for heart and mind to agree on some things. Its always good to follow our mind tho. As inner peace and mental health is more important when making certain decisions in life too. But tonight I must tell you my sweet poetry mama, my heart and mind are totally in sync! They are truly a team, and I am satisfied my soul is at ease! Hah Cus sometimes we dont realize ~ until we fear losing our sanity and self respect Sorry for rambling Fave! 💋

I agree and often we're left wondering... should I, or shouldn't I? We don't always choose the right one to listen to but choose we must. I'm truly happy that your mind and heart and not squabbling, Ink. Life is so much simpler that way. You don't ramble... you speak from your heart when addressing me and your mind agrees!!!🥰

They've been the cause of lots of stress to most humans who have to deal with an ear to each of them. We don't always go with the best choice, but we have to live with both of these imps. Thanks, Dotti.

Dear Lin, An eternal tension we all know entirely too well. That endless, ticking tug-of-war between the cool logic of the mind and the vulnerable pulse of the heart is one of the hardest things about being human. Maybe the soul knows that it isn't about picking a winner or forcing a surrender, it's about learning to live with the friction. To risk love, knowing full well the mind will object, is a brave kind of grace. So much truth, humor, and tender self-awareness. Blessing, Daniel

Thanks for the insightful comments you always leave for me in your personal way, Daniel. I've gone through so many battles between those two. Usually, the heart wins but that's not always a good thing. I'm sending you soup mail.
