Mildred’s Onion Rolls

A colleague once gave me, on paper,
A recipe written by hand
For Passover rolls
And one of her goals
Was for choices I’d make to expand.

Though they can’t substitute for a bagel
Or some sourdough or seeded rye,
For the holiday week
When some bread I might seek,
They’re a stand-in on which I rely.

When I make them, I’m thinking of Mildred,
Though I’m certain that she is long gone,
But when I form the dough
Into roll shapes, I know
That her spirit I’m carrying on.

I really like this poem, Ilene, especially in knowing that you are "carrying on" Mildred's spirit at this oh so important holiday. That touches my heart. In September I make lemon meringue pie to remember my mother-in-law and at Thanksgiving I make applesauce cake to remember my grandmother. Remembering these wonderful women is truly a precious experience! Thank you for your wonderful poem. May your Passover be rich with blessings.

Good one Ilene. Sometimes it is the mundane things in life that bring back good memories

Thank you, Jan! It's interesting to me that these memories mean so much to me (especially the food ones associated with Passover), despite the fact that I am not religious at all. I hope you have a wonderful holiday, too, whether you celebrate it or not...
