Notes About The Poem

Emile Pinet's Free Verse Contest   November 2, 2024

Memory's Souvenirs

I laud precious memories when cold nights prevail.
Those that fan love's flames against Winter winds
for in those images my lonely heart beats again,
if only an interlude where grief holds no reign.
But mourns my heart when they are bittersweet.
Each one a dagger plunged too deep.
They cannot be banished or cast aside,
for with each attack my wounds bleed again.
I cannot escape the sorrowful tears
that trickle when those memories come unbidden.
There's no antidote to stave off the infection
of the melancholy sadness my mind recalls.
But there are melodious moments,
joyfully sweet dulcet thoughts
when gentler memories flow.
They brush across my heart like paint on canvas,
as treasured works of art being recalled.
When a smile, sans apparent reason, reaches my eyes
making them shine as if emerging from an eclipse,
a cherished memory is being recollected.
These are the priceless souvenirs I relive.

Dear Lin, as always a poem that flows with not just brilliant imagery and metaphors, but also with such poignant emotions, i felt the depth of this poem so very strongly, and i especially loved the lines “ But mourns my heart when they are bittersweet. Each one a dagger plunged too deep. They cannot be banished or cast aside,” soul hitting! Powerful yet has a softness to it, as it is woven in such an elegant manner. I also loved your use of subtle alliterations, congratulations on your win

Lin, a heartfelt poem, love can be so wonderful and also a painful experience. It's nice to treasure such wonderful memories as well and not dwell on the sad ones.

It's not easy to ignore the sad ones when they show up uninvited, but we shove past them. Thank you, Tania.

Those heartfelt memories we wish we would have never experienced. Hopefully we have more good ones then bad. Best wishes in the contest Lin, I really like this one. Have a nice evening and keep those bothersome memories away. God bless you...

Memories, we all have them both happy and sad, it's a shame we can't erase the bad ones from our minds. You're right though Lin, the happy ones are priceless. Best of luck in the contest. Tom

memories bring smiles and tears. My dad wishes he could start life over, having my mom by his side even in childhood :) Bless you, Lin
