Memories of Christmas Past

Christmas memories come flooding back
Just a few small gifts in my Santa sack
In the toe there’s an orange and a sugar mouse
I’d hide the mouse to scare mum in the house

Some chocolate coins wrapped in gold foil
And some coloured balls containing bath oil
A box of jelly slices in orange and yellow
In truth I much preferred mashmallow!

Larger presents are piled beneath the tree
Always a board game for all the family
My favourite gift was such a surprise
The cutest teddy with sweet brown eyes

I hugged my teddy, and named him Fritz
I can’t stop grinning, I’m chuffed to bits

Now I have to know what chuffed to bits means " I’m chuffed to bits" What is it? Eaten to bits? Kicked to bits? Smashed to bits?

Jan, congratulations on your winning placement in the poetry contest, and thank you so much for sharing this sweet poem! How cute that you tried to scare your mama with the mouse, that is so adorable. So precious the memory of your Teddy Bear. I still have a stuffed dog I got when I was little, those stuffed animals were so treasured! I hope you had a very merry Christmas and that the new year ahead will be filled with all that is good and wonderful for you!

We must have been rich we got an orange and a banana. Needs to be re introduced along with putting needs of children first. Glad you wrote this one. Nice to know others experienced same delight in the simple touches that make for the best memories at Christmas and I guess throughout year. This year some presents are framed photos. Picked up photo frames during year at Salvation Army and Hospice shops. Modern frames are expensive and rubbish. Merry Christmas Jan to you your family David in NZ

Sweet memories, Jan... and thanks for introducing me to the word 'chuffed.' ~ With a huff and a chuff, the Big Bad Wolf blew the poor piggie's house down... Uh-huh

Smashing piece of reverie, Jan. I wonder what our parents would have said if we’d asked for the latest PlayStation and an iPhone 13… oh, and……..

I am not particularly materialistic, if I get 2 gifts this year that will be it - having my hubby cancer free in 2013 was the best gift I ever had:-) hugs Jan xx

You certainly captured the memories of Christmas past through a child’s eyes Jan, we really had to make the most of what we had which was very little, but it meant so much, I enjoyed your trip down memory lane, cheers David

Thanks Vie I was only talking with mum about the orange and lemon slices and how I detested them - they were so sugary sweet lol, and Fritz was a teddy that came from Germany - he was straw filled and some yrs later had to be ditched as his arms were on hooks and it was deemed to be dangerous:-( hugs Jan xx
