Memorable Journey
Let me tell you a story…
In the arctic sky of scenic Norway the midnight sun
leaned briefly on the horizon in summer to again rise,
not known when new day would actually have begun,
in winter night flash of aurora borealis sprang surprise.
To unravel the mysteries of the Nordic Caledonian rock
I crossed many ridges and fjords in the west of Bergen city,
went across uninhabited islands where eagles would flock,
in chilled rains I had taken shelter in ancient caves pretty.
In Lyderhorn, an idyllic village, I stayed a number of days,
the hamlet faced tranquil turquoise waters of Loddefjord.
An affable lady, Julia Aasen, lively in advanced life phase,
rented me a furnished room at the time I could afford.
She used to invite me almost every evening for dinner,
offered me peppered boiled potato and fiskeboller hot,
sandwich of brown bread with Jerlsberg cheese inner.
Showed the faded pictures of her late husband, Skott.
Time came to leave and say ‘tusen tak’ on a freezing day,
she gifted me a pair of woolen gloves she knitted for me.
Years later when I wear these her presence they convey,
I feel the warmth of heart of genial Julia who I’ll never see.
