Means of Escape

Just read a book
   written by a Jewish woman
which was published in the 1920's
It told of a working woman and her would - be benefactors
The story moved quickly - it was a fast read
It threw me back in time
to an age quite different than our own
Although it really wasn't all that far back in time
  The writer captured the zeitgeist
 quite well
Reading a story can
    can remove one
from their reality temporarily
and bring peace to a worried mind
   Poetry is different
It cuts into the cold heart
  like an icepick
Here in the fabled Lower East Side
we need relief
some people here play dominoes all day
   some love rock and roll
Whatever your heart tells you to feel
Try to capture it in words
Reach out and tell them your story
I escaped last night into the
   pages of a novel
I remember a song which
   had the lyric
"wish I could find a good book to live in"
  I concur

I've always used books and poetry as an escape. One of the best things about being a writer is you can go anywhere your pen takes you... I just enjoyed escaping a bit through your poem this evening. Very well penned, Matthew.
