Maybe
In second grade, Romeo wrote me a love note, confessing his feelings toward me and asking if I felt the same. "Check yes or no" was written on the bottom, along with three empty boxes. (A "maybe" one was an afterthought, which made the decision easy.)
Maybe we would date,
play a game of chase,
hold hands at recess,
and sit together on the bus.
~Just the two of us~
Maybe we would run away,
get married,
have babies,
and live happily ever after.
Maybe....
When I handed it back, he smiled at me, crossed out "maybe," and emphasized "yes or no?"
Coyly I couldn't confess my interest in writing,
so I chose "no."
Maybe "no" meant "yes"
and "yes" meant "no."
Maybe he didn't know.
Maybe I'd never know him.
