Maybe

In second grade, Romeo wrote me a love note, confessing his feelings toward me and asking if I felt the same. "Check yes or no" was written on the bottom, along with three empty boxes. (A "maybe" one was an afterthought, which made the decision easy.) Maybe we would date, play a game of chase, hold hands at recess, and sit together on the bus. ~Just the two of us~ Maybe we would run away, get married, have babies, and live happily ever after. Maybe.... When I handed it back, he smiled at me, crossed out "maybe," and emphasized "yes or no?" Coyly I couldn't confess my interest in writing, so I chose "no." Maybe "no" meant "yes" and "yes" meant "no." Maybe he didn't know. Maybe I'd never know him. 4-1-2021

Out of the few poems I’ve read by you this is the most interesting so far. I like the bashfulness and butterflies-in-stomach like vibe this makes me think of... school days on the playground: what could be, but didn’t. The what-ifs (but weren’t). So playfully written. Makes me wonder, myself, what life might have been like growing up in an actual school instead of homeschool.

Thanks, Timothy. My husband was homeschooled as well, only for a few years though. So many "what ifs" in life, but I don't dwell too much on it, just a whimsical write.

How cute would it be if his name was really Romeo? This takes me back, all those shy teasing games we would play~

Yeah, unfortunately he wasn't "Romeo," but I shouldn't give real names. I've played this game a few times and once there was a "maybe" option. Of course I went with that. He was so confused.
