Maradona Remembered

From a shanty town birth, Diego Maradona seized Argentinean glory His big boned, centered to the ground frame with an easy flow of speed and grace slicing the soccer field flashing by defenders to goal keepers outstretched and blue The football, an orb of purpose, set in play for a maze of goals like paths to salvation A blood rush to you and to fans as drumbeats of skill spurred crowds to their feet. Ball control specialist Free kick master Rose leaves in your hair Diego with each World Cup win carried aloft by outstretched hands by cheering waves, a nation's adoration Till the wicked weight of addiction dimmed your dark eyes Cocaine dependent - a crushing load. The turnaround in finding God unyoking burden birth to a new self Nobler to speak for the poor to part the curtains of our eyes once more A hallowed athlete's life joy and sorrow on two strong legs that swept the field that ran through life a legacy for the ages celestial placed. Thank you David. Very thoughtful of you to post a comment. Maradona was incredibly complex. He lead a rich, full life so much of which I overlooked in keeping the piece short. Best wishes Brian

Brian, I don't think I've read any of your poetry before for some reason and I'm so pleased that you entered this contest which displayed your unquestionable poetic skill. This was a pleasure to read and I was also educated along the way as I hadn't appreciated the huge turn around in his life.
