Mantis Religiosa

There she was ,
  perched upon the upper stalk
  of the echinacea flower cone
Leaning left then right
  in upright posture,
yet stationary with fore arms folded,
the praying mantis
  once believed to be paranormal
preying in ambush, ultimate femme fatale.
The head, the eyes strained forward
stretching to catch a tantalizing morsel
  when the cardinal swooped down
and flew off with her in its beak
to feed the fledglings in her nest
they prayed most thankful for the feast.
