He was sent to prison in 1963 and released in 1990__ After serving the prison sentence for 27 years. Internationally admired for his struggle against white minority rule__ Voted south africa,s first black president in 1994, after the end of apartheid. SPENT ONE TERM IN OFFICE, AND STEPPED DOWN IN 1999. Currently living in eastern cape province in a small rural village of Qunu. In 2004,he retired from public life,and has been rarely seen in public.
