Notes About The Poem

I hereby take John Watts' and Sam Kauffman's challenge to write a poem for Opening Day of the Baseball Season.  Batter up! ...

Major League Baseball -- 2020

The crack of the bat
  but no crackerjacks
The game we held dear
without a beer or a cheer

The ball sails into the stands
  where it's empty of fans
Radios pick up the players talk
and their cleats as they walk

The 'boys in the booth'
may not be long in the tooth
Yet once-exciting plays
  just don't thrill or amaze

"The runner slides into home!" --
  where we watch all alone
Sigh... The 'old ball game'
~ is just not the same

You have penned a poem that explains the craziness of this weird empty stadium well.

I agree, watching the Rangers opener was really strange. For a donation of $50 the Rangers Foundation would put a cut out out your picture in a seat, there were several hundred right behind home plate. From the centerfield camera it appeared that there were fans in the stands...but it was silent. Your poem captures the moment, Gershon. Cheers, John

Yeah, it's even a bit strange on the radio with that canned background noise. It must be totally weird on TV. (Haven't watched the tube for a couple decades or four). Today the noise is pretty loud at the Cubs-Brewers game. The announcers claim that the tech guys revved up the noise considerably... Thanks, John! Best always, Gershon

Hey, TS! Those rooftop prices are through the roof, are they not?! A whole 'byte' too pricey for me, I confess. Take me home (to my radio) to the ballgame. Take me in to my room... Cheers, Gershon

Very well done, Gershon. This too shall pass--some day, whenever God is ready to take it away. Janice

Right, the whole shebang is in God's hands. We'll see what happens... though we have to make our effort down here too... Thanks, Gershon

Ha, ha! No need to be concerned about me, my friend. I haven't attended baseball games for a couple decades, and only did so to introduce the sport to my kids... Wrote this one for others. My nerdy friends and I spend our spare time visiting patients in nursing homes, reading to blind people, and other do-gooder pursuits. Beers and cheers -- don't even know what they feel like, truth be told. Cheers and beers, Gershon
