Magnolia Tree

Cupped white, dusky pink. Satin gills softly breathing, Catalyst of spring. Pert, prayerful votive lights Opening like fledgling beaks

I have a featured poem, and have been reading the others. Among all the those which I have read so far (3 of 4 pages), yours outstanding... intelligent, with striking imagery -- and it's grammatical! Have you noticed the ubiquity of bad grammar, fudged "rhymes" (like rhyming "men" and "friends"-- better no rhymes at all than forced ones!), myriad clichés, simplistic notions, here?... That's why it's so refreshing to encounter a real poet, among too many poetasters. Well done.

Thanks JP - I really appreciate your comments and encouragement. There certainly are a variety of styles on poetry soup but any form of self expression is good in my book. I’ve just read your poem and loved it ! A worthy winner and I have posted a comment on it I like the Tanka style myself - it’s like taking a literary pokaroid and if I capture the essence of the image or feeling through words then that really makes me happy ! ??

Thank you Barbara. The Magnolia tree was planted by my late father who always loved it and it’s beauty, albeit brief, is always inspiring.
