Close up, under the petrologic microscope, high-power modern optics scans a mineral set in a thin rock chip matrix. Viewed in the polarized light, on the rotating microscope stage, sunset hues sweep across the grain, the mineral flashes fiery colors, defined by its crystal structure. A geologist tells me it’s a precious mineral, hidden in its natural habitat of rock fabric.
