Madmen and Fools

I miss something I've not seen for a while,
yet it used to magically appear.
And had the power to dry any tear,
able to both mesmerize and beguile.
Obviously, I'm speaking of a smile,
for it's been replaced by worry and fear.
We live in precarious times of hate,
where our children are slaughtered with a gun.
And despite all the tears, nothing gets done,
these barbaric acts only escalate.
We watch politics deteriorate,
and there is enough blame for everyone.
Religious sanctuaries and our schools
are now killing grounds for madmen and fools.
