Madmen and Fools

I miss something I've not seen for a while;
once it used to magically appear.
It had the power to dry any tear;
able to both mesmerize and beguile.
I'm speaking of a spontaneous smile
that has been erased by worry and fear.
We live in precarious times of hate,
where children shoot their classmates with a gun.
And despite all the tears, nothing gets done,
these atrocious acts only escalate.
We watch politics deteriorate,
and there is enough blame for everyone.
Religious gatherings and public schools
are now killing grounds for madmen and fools.
