Notes About The Poem

March 5, 2026 for Edward Ibeh's This Or That, Vol 37 Poetry Contest

Lupine

“The wolf loves only once, for life; never crossing bloodlines, never betraying. If its mate dies, it chooses solitude over replacement” from University of Life Tribute

Loyalty he bestowed on the one he would defend
Until the day his dear mate
Passed tragically away.
Inconsolably, he mourned where her lifeless body lay.
Numb now, he has gone out on his own,
Ever more to be again . . . alone.

A wonderfully written acrostic, Andrea. I loved this. It packs a punch. Heartiest congratulations on your win in my contest.

In a different context, Andrea, a touching tribute which has an emotional resonance. It is so profound. Hearfelt thanks for your generous reviews of my recent poetry postings on poetry Soup. Howard

You ALMOST made me feel sorry for a werewolf, that's how good this is. I never heard 'university of life tribute', not sure what it means so I'm concerned my brain is missing something all others know? Never knew that wolf fact either, or maybe I forgot that, too. Very clever, unique and unexpected by me.

Isn't it interesting how wolves are? I don't know what University of Life is either but there other quotes saying the same thing.

We had a pair of lake ducks. The female died. The male stared at the lake, and finally one day he was gone, met his beloved in heaven. It was a heartfelt event as I used to walk around the lake.

So sad. I guess even ducks are this way. I have cats. They don't seem to miss when one goes away. Dolphins and elephants are also like wolves are with their mates

Great decision to write this one about Wolves, Andrea. I know there has been a contest going on so I feel this one is a great contender for the contest. Way to go. Thank you for sharing this information with us. I did not know that wolves mated for life as some animal species do. Sara K

Dear sweet andrea There are so many in life too who hve that personality, and youv written a very creative acrostic on this, so very flawless. And the quote is perfect! I dont know what this word means but you surely did give me an idea! Maybe the teacher side of you did that. Through poetry and more, you teach us! Sending you light always

Lupine means wolf like. The quote is true. A wolf mourns his partner and will often leave the pack when they lose their partner

This admirable side of the wolf, l have never known. So, wolf is never so 'wolfish' as we think.
