Notes About The Poem

The poem contrasts polished, arrogant optimism against battered, cynical realism—challenging the reader to decide whether life's greatest moments are built on shallow triumphs or the grit of tragic missteps.

Lucky-Unlucky Debate

They met in the margins of a dictionary page,
Where Lucky and Unlucky took to the stage.

Both capitalized, both wearing their names,
Ready to play their perpetual games.

Act I: The Meeting of Mindsets

Lucky stepped out, a four-leaf clover in his hand,
Smelling of fresh rain and a winning lottery grand.

"Good morning, my shadow, my sorrowful twin!
Did you fall out of bed on your face once again?

I’ve just saved a man from a runaway bus,
While you look like you’ve been run over by us."

Unlucky adjusted two permanent casts,
Wiping the soot from loud exhaust blasts.

"Oh, shut your mouth, you insufferable glint!
You smelling of daisies and fresh-minted print!

You think you’re a king with your pennies face-up,
While I’m choking to death off a chip in my cup!

You're a fluke! An anomaly! A cosmic mistake!
A cheap parlor trick that the gamblers all fake!"

Act II: The Great Ostracization

"A mistake?" scoffed Lucky, his white teeth aglow,
"I’m the reason that empires and gardens can grow!

I’m the second-half touchdown, a perfect blind date,
The typo that accidentally made a man great!

But you—you’re a parasite, heavy and grim,
The anchor that pulls down the folks who can swim.

If I were the language, I’d edit you out,
You’re a comma of panic, a syntax of doubt!"

"Edit me out?!" screamed Unlucky, enraged,
As a random black cat crossed the floor of the stage.

"I’m the meat of the story! The depth of the plot!
Without me, the tragedies all would be not!

You’re a shallow, pedantic, superficial cliché,
A hallmark-card greeting that rots in a day!

Go hang with your horseshoes, you privileged bore,
I’m the realest damn syllable on this white page floor!"

Act III: The Climactic Breakdown

"You're a curse!" yelled the fortunate.
"You're a fraud!" yelled the jinxed.

"I am destiny’s darling!" "You're totally unlinked!"

And just as Unlucky prepared to spit fire,
To call his bright brother a beautiful liar,

A rogue piece of space junk fell straight through the cover,
Slamming down hard like the sound of thunder.

It missed Lucky’s shoulder by less than an inch,
Landing square on Unlucky’s poor toe in a pinch.

Lucky cheered, "See! The universe knows!"
While Unlucky howled, nursing his toes.

"You see?" wept the victim, "The metrics are clear!
You’re a snob, I’m a martyr, and we’re done here!"

Both turned on their heels, retreating in spite,
One into the darkness, one into the light.

Forever divided by a prefixes' wall,
The loudest, most hysterical words of them all.

What a lively, inventive allegory. Giving Lucky and Unlucky equal billing as capitalised dictionary-dwellers makes their quarrel instantly theatrical, while the three-act structure builds beautifully from comic sparring to the absurdly perfect final proof of their opposing worldviews. The wordplay—especially “a comma of panic” and “the realest damn syllable”—is wonderfully sharp, and the space-junk climax delivers both slapstick and irony.

Thank you, Alison. I've held on to this one for months deciding what to do with it. I wrote it, re-wrote it, and then mofdified it again and this is the result. Enjoy your day. - Chris
