Love Me From Afar

Love Me From Afar
Love me from afar, don’t come too near,
Your fists write lessons my body must fear.
You call it anger, you call it stress,
Then beg forgiveness while I clean the mess.
Your hands don’t slip they strike with intent,
Each blow a reminder of what I represent.
I learn to flinch before you decide,
Read storms in your breath, the rage in your eyes.
You knock me quiet, you beat me small,
Till silence feels safer than speech at all.
I lie on the floor counting cracks and breath,
Wondering which apology dodges death.
You promise change with a shaking voice,
Swear this time it’s different, swear I have a choice.
“I hate myself,” you cry on my skin,
But morning repeats what the night did in.
You thrive on my terror, my frozen stare,
My stillness confirms that I know my place there.
Each bruise I hide keeps your power alive,
Proof you decide if I break or survive.
You call it love when you hold me tight
Right after teaching my ribs how to fight.
Your arms are a cage, your chest a wall,
I’m trapped between “I’m sorry” and the next time I fall.
Possession is not love it’s control by pain,
A cycle of harm dressed up as restraint.
You don’t want my heart, my voice, my trust,
You want my obedience carved into dust.
So love me from distance, stay out of my skin,
Because closeness with you is a battle I can’t win.
I’m tired of hoping your promises last
If love is your weapon, then love me from afar.
