Living This Life
Trying to stay connected
I wave at neighbors from across
the sidewalk, street, and park.
Wearing gloves I cover
my mouth when I cough or sneeze.
Owners of dogs I used to pet
I smile and keep my distance.
Basic things taken for granted
have changed--will I get bread today?
What neighbor needs help?
Who is ill? Who is lonely?
Sitting at home
looking out my window
we are together and apart.
Waking up each morning
I hope for something better
joy and laughter—
to live and freely touch
family and friends again.
