Litmus Test

Litmus Test Trust is key in all relationships. Everyone has secrets. There's a saying, we're only as sick as the secrets we keep. Sharing the secrets that undermine my mental health, absolutely need to be shared. This means I'll make a choice to be vulnerable and share them. I must trust that person to keep my confidence. This means I believe that person is honest, good, or reliable. I expect my secrets will be kept private, and won't be shared with anyone else. I have a simple test to determine whether a person is trustworthy. It's my litmus test. I'll share something that is personal, but won't devastate me if my confidence is betrayed. Sometimes a secret is unintentionally shared. I know I've done so in the past. So, if that person comes to me and tells me there was an accidental disclosure, and shows remorse, then I'll give that person one more chance. There will be no more chances if I discover the betrayal. However, I'll be far more discerning with what I share. Once again, I'll take a risk. I'll share something that isn't common knowledge. If my trust is betrayed, then I know he or she is untrustworthy to keep my secrets and honor my vulnerability. This doesn't mean I end the relationship. There are a variety of friendships, each with unique characteristics. I just know that this person isn't someone I'll share my important thoughts and feelings with. My litmus test is simple, I can sort out those I can safely disclose my secrets. It's served me well throughout my life. Sherry Barton February 23, 2025
