Notes About The Poem

Robert Liquori's Any New Poem Contest ~ June 30, 2026

Lingering Alone

I remember losing your hands in tempest winds
as they boldly swept you away from my arms.
They led you off overland, to rivers of ash
as if they'd swallowed you beneath dark depths.

Now, I sit alone in dusk's twilight skies,
and in dawn's blush before the sun can arise,
wiping tears from my reddened weary eyes...
as the porchlight hums echoes of your laugh.

Moths circle the brightness, tempting death
while I imagine hearing your phantom steps.
The garden we planted rots in rain-soaked rows
drowned in weather as insect's feast their fill.

Silence grows ever more difficult to bear.
I seek your face but you're never there,
not even when the moon pales in the night.
How long do I linger with this haunting fright?

Chilled, I keep myself wrapped in your coat
fearing one day I may not recognize your scent...
If I could be set free, I would drift on a breeze
above a canopy of Autumn leaves,
back to the home we fondly shared
and found you sitting there, forlorn
lost in memories from our past.

Would that you could hear my whispers
you would know my love is with you there...
I am the golden glow of Summer's sunrise
and the first tumbling flake of Winter's snow.

Ah I have no words but just be in awe of how you express love and loss and so many emotions linnersz, I have a long day ahead but i thought of reading some poems before I head out. And wanted to read you! And im not surprised that your poem is one worthy of so many accolades! I really love also "I am the golden glow of Summer's sunrise and the first tumbling flake of Winter's snow." The subtle use of alliterations to paint imagery is beautiful! Pleasure reading. Congratulations on your win. Sending you light always
